The Tree is GONE!

Two weekends ago, my husband and his friend Aaron braved the cold fall weather and faced the challenge of taking down a pine tree in our yard.  Let me first explain that this pine tree (by estimation from ring counting) was at least 28 years old.  It stood a few feet from our home and about 15 feet from our next-door neighbor's.  It was promising not to be an easy task.

A few days before Friday night, when Aaron was to arrive, Paul began sawing off branches that he could get to with his extendable branch saw and with the help of a ladder.  He managed to remove the bottom half of all the branches before "take-down day."

Friday evening, Paul and Aaron spent time outside measuring and calculating.  This was a good thing as, earlier in the day, the neighbor's daughter came outside and was taking photos of the tree and her dad's house and garage (for insurance purposes, I imagine)!  Well, both men are nothing if not careful planners, so my worry was only of the off-chance of a freak chain-saw accident or wind gust.  I knew that the tree would fall exactly where they planned it would.

After hearty omelettes on Saturday morning, the men got to work.  With their breath steaming from their mouths, they confirmed their calculations, donned work gloves, brought out the ladder, ropes, and a climbing harness.  Their next step was to rent the chain saw.  That done, the branch trimming began again, and the kids and I were entertained for a few hours.  Check out the "Watch Our Tree Fall" post to see the actual fall!
